The Green Fields & BeyondBattle of Cambrai - battlefield tours

Tanks at Cambrai

This fascinating tour looks at the Battle of Cambrai – the first mass use of tanks in WW1 when more than 400 tanks supported by artillery and infantry smashed the German Hindenburg Line. We are in the Cambrai area close to the period of the 20th November Anniversary – if any  ceremonies or events take place they will be added to the tour itinerary closer to the tour departure.

Our itinerary
Day 1 To northern France for 3 nights.
Day 2 Havrincourt & Bourlon Wood (included). We begin with a look at the fighting on 20th November 1917 and start in the sector around Moeuvres where the 56th (London) Division fought. At Havrincourt we see the wood, and follow the attack of the 62nd (West Riding) Division from their memorial to the ground near Anneux, their final objective and then move on to Bourlon Wood. We then continue on to the important ‘right hook’ of operations in 1917. We see the ground at La Vacquerie and Lateau Wood where the 12th (Eastern) Division fought, and also look at the German counter-attack, seeing where the Guards Division stood their ground at Gouzeaucourt and Gonnelieu. We end the day at Welsh Ridge where we follow the Royal Naval Division, and examine a forgotten truce of the last winter of the war. B
Day 3 Anniversary & Cambrai Memorial (included). On this day we will attend any special events, and also visit the Cambrai Memorial at Louverval, take lunchtime in Cambrai and visit cemeteries in the area of the city itself. We also see the Flesquieres area along with the grave of war poet E.A.Mackintosh and also the Newfoundland Memorial at Masnieres. If no ceremonies take place, additional visits connected to the battle will be added to the itinerary. B
Day 4 To Calais, then return home. B
