Arnhem - the battle that might never have happened! It is in this region that we follow the ill fated operation devised by General Monttomery to shorten the war. a dash up through Holland and across the North German plain to, hopefully, end the war by Christmas 1944.Operation Market Garden battlefield tour

Your itinerary
Day 1 Local departure by coach then onwards to Arnhem-Velp for a three-night stay.
Day 2 Ysselsteyn, Overloon and Nijmegen (included) and Groesbeek Liberation Museum (optional). Today we see the German Cemetery at Ysselsteyn, followed by Venray British Cemetery, before visiting the National War and Resistance Museum at Overloon. We then travel to Nijmegen, where you can spend time at leisure or join our optional excursion in the afternoon to the National Liberation Museum at Groesbeek, which overlooks the Landing Zones of the American 82nd Airborne Division and the Reichswald Forest. During the tour we also see the Groesbeek Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery, which contains the memorial bering the names of 1103 Commonwealth Servicemen (many lost at Arnhem) who have no known grave. Day 3 Hell’s Highway and Oosterbeek (included). Travelling to ‘Hell’s Highway’, we pass through Son and Veghel to Grave, then onwards to the bridge at Arnhem, which was defended by the British 1st Airborne Division. We then see St. Elizabeth Hospital, the scene of bitter fighting, and Acacialaan, where Sgt. Baskeyfield won his V.C., before arriving at the 1st Airborne Museum. Housed in the Hartenstein Hotel at Oosterbeek, this was the headquarters of the Arnhem Division. (Please note: the Airborne Museum is close for refurbishment until the end of August 2009 - we will therefore visit "Arnhem War Museum 40-45" instead). We also see memorials at Ginkelheide and Heelsum. Day 4 To Calais then return home. B

Your hotel
You will stay for three nights in the 4-star Golden Tulip Hotel at Arnhem-Velp or similar. The hotel has a lounge, bar and excellent restaurant with terrace. Sauna and Turkish bath are available free of charge. All bedrooms have a telephone, T.V., tea/coffee making facilities and hairdryer. The hotel has two floors and does not have a lift.
