To coincide with the 90th Anniversary of the Kaiserschlacht – the start of Germany’s last offensive in the West in 1918 – this fascinating tour looks at key locations on the Somme front connected with this battle

Our itinerary
Day 1 To northern France for a 3-night stay.
Day 2 St. Quentin and Essigny le Grand (included). After arrival at our hotel in northern France, our first day is 21st March and we will attend any major ceremonies in the area of St. Quentin, close to where the battle began in 1918. We spend lunchtime in St. Quentin and will also visit any special exhibitions. Later in the day we will travel to Essigny le Grand to visit the war museum there and also see the Pozières Memorial, which commemorates the majority of those whofell on 21st March 1918. B
Day 3 The Battle Area (included). Today we will follow some of the events of 21st March, seeing battlefield sites and cemeteries largely connected with the Kaiser’s Battle. We start at Ham, a vital communications network and headquarters, and see the British and German graves. At Savy we follow the story of war poet Wilfred Owen, and then move on to Manchester Hill where we discover the story of the Manchester Pals who defended Manchester Hill to the last man with their commanding officer Lt-Col Elstob, who would win a posthumous VC that day. We then follow the area of the front line to Grand Seraucourt British Cemetery, one of the most important in the area connected with March 1918. At Vadencourt we follow the story of Lt-Col Jack Dimmer VC of the King’s Royal Rifle Corps, seeing his grave. We end the day at Maissemy, at the huge German cemetery with nearly 40,000 graves. B
Day 4 Travel home via Calais. B
