Arnhem & the Rhine Crossings
Arnhem & the Rhine Crossings
This tour looks at the Allied attempts to cross the mighty River Rhine with, firstly a study of the battle for Arnhem, followed by their later attempts in February and March 1945. It was only then that the Allies would meet with some success and finally push into Germany - six months later than anticipated, in foul weather conditions.
After the failure of "Operation Market Garden", there had to be a re-think about Allied strategy. In the meantime, Hitler had put together his "last gasp attempt" to defeat the Allies, the ill-fated "Battle of the Bulge". This was to delay any plans to cross the Rhine. It was not until February that the British and Canadian troops started to push through Rhineland with "Operation Veritable". The weather conditions were atrocious, as they were, also, for the American troops further south in the Huertegen Forest. Perseverance was to prevail as the Allies pushed against a much weakened, but very determined German army. It would be the Americans who would have success first, with their crossing at Remagen whilst the British/Canadians struggles through the dreadful Reichswald Forest. By the end of March, the Allies were across the Rhine, and thought they were heading for Berlin - but - that is another story.
